KMTA Student Workshops is now
KMTA State Honors Recital
by Melissa Green, NCTM
Exciting news! The KMTA Student Workshops now has a new name: KMTA State Honors Recital. The name change was
approved by the KMTA board in September 2011. The board feels that the new title will help to reflect the goal of the event: to
showcase Kentucky students who had demonstrated superior performances at their local workshops/rallies. The repertoire and
format will stay the same; only the title has changed. Participants in grades 1-6 perform in the Elementary Division, and grades 7-
12 perform in the Jr/Sr Division. Students will play two or three pieces for adjudicator comments and will play the one best piece
in the recital.
Of particular note to local workshop/rally organizers is the new “25% Guideline.” In an effort to encourage equal participation
from all local associations, the board also approved this motion in September 2011. Local associations are invited to send the top
25% of entries to the KMTA State Honors Recital each year. Notice that the guideline is 25% of entries, not participants; this will
ensure that duets and trios can also qualify. Remember, too, that the Honors Recital can accommodate vocal, strings, and other
instrumental programs as well as piano. As always, though, two-piano works are discouraged due to venue limitations. For
example, if a workshop/rally has 100 entries consisting of solos, duets, trios, and vocal programs, the top 25 of those entries are
invited to participate in the Honors Recital. It is left up to the discretion of the local workshop/rally chair to decide how many
entries from each category (strings, vocal, piano, etc) should be sent.
This year’s Student Workshop was graciously hosted by Eastern Kentucky University. Participants enjoyed a theory carnival and
used their gift certificates at Gist Music Center’s on-site vendor, right there in the EKU music building. The recitals were well
attended and showcased sparkling performances.
The 2012 State Honors Recital will be held at Morehead State University on Saturday, October 20. As in previous years, all
workshop/rally reporting forms are posted at www.kymta.org.
